Emergence

Emergence is a basic property that an entity gains when it becomes part of a bigger system. This property can be found practiced almost anywhere, anytime and by almost anything, but is often left unnoticed.

When fishes swim in schools, they dodge and avoid predators not by intention, but rather by following simple rules - to stay close to one another but not too close, and to just keep swimming. As more of them follow these simple rules, more fishes join the school and this school eventually becomes a new entity that has its own unique set of behaviors. Similary to humans, emergence is demonstrated in the neurons in our brains, where they work together collectively to form images or ideas around something, allowing us to see, think and identify. If we were to separate these neurons individually, we wouldn't be able to act like how we do normally, because there is no collective image formed.

This 2 channel moving image display draws the similarities between the fish and the human being through a shared property of emergence, that is widely demonstrated on a daily basis.
